After Breakfast we drove to Taos Pueblo, it was only 3 miles from our hotel! It was pretty chilly at 48 degrees! Taos is in the Sangre de Crista Mountains. It is a very Beautifu setting. There are numerous ski resorts in the area.
The Taos Pueblo was built between 1100 and 1450. The tallest part of the Pueblo is 5 stories! The English name Taos derives from the native Tais language meaning "Place of Red Willows". The red Wilow river runs through the Village of Taos Pueblo.
These are pictures of the Church of San Geronimo built in 1850 to replace the one that was destroyed in the Mexican-American War.
We talked to two men from the Pueblo. One was selling jewelry and the other was crossing the bridge that was over the Red Willow River. Bud asked him if the river came from the snow runoff, but he told us the water came from a lake about 25 miles from the Pueblo. The people were very nice and we really enjoyed our visit. We then drive back into the town of Taos to see the Tais Plaza! It is a park in the middle of town and it is surrounded by gift sties, jewelry stores, cafes, and an old historic hotel!
